We normally associate beaches with the summer time, however our Norfolk coastline is a haven to wildlife in the winter months.
When you stay with us at Poolside Lodges why not spend a day exploring the Norfolk coastline and see the seals at Horsey Gap. Wrap up warm and explore. Below you will find our recommendation for a day out.
Visit the Seals at Horsey Gap, Norfolk
Take a leisurely drive out to Horsey which is just over a 35 minute drive. Horsey gap is nestled on the coast between the more known beaches of Winterton-on-Sea and Sea Palling. This beach is popular with our Grey Seals during the winter months, the seals come up on to the beach to rest and have their pups. It really is quite a site to see so many seals in one place with their fluffy white pups. They look rather majestic!..and no boat trip required.
It is wise to remember that seals are wild and not to get too close to them. In the main pupping season, the beach has wardens to monitor the pups and ensure their space is maintained.
STOP OFF FOR A BITE TO EAT
The Dunes Café is a delightful café based on the beach at Winterton-on-Sea (few miles down the road). We highly recommend a breakfast here or you may prefer a warm drink and a cake. There is a superb range of cakes (all homemade) and it’s very hard to choose which one (we have been known to bring extra home with us)!
Explore the Marshes
Horsey Windpump is a beautiful landscape with a wealth of wildlife. You may spot birds such as the Marsh Harrier or Bitterns. If you enjoy walking there is a 2 mile circular walk, a great way to immerse yourself in the tranquil landscape of the mere and reed beds.
Unwind and Relax
So you've been exploring and now you just want to unwind. We provide blankets in our lodges so you can cosy up and watch a film, or if you prefer you can relax in your own hot tub. Hot tubs are brilliant at this time of year to relax those aching muscles and warm you through to your core. Having relaxed, you'll find you have a great night's sleep and feel refreshed in the morning.
